Compared to the two other major fossil fuels we use, Petroleum and Coal, Natural Gas burns much cleaner. It also burns extremely well, producing a hot, bright flame while producing no smoke, ash or smell. These properties are making it increasingly popular as a means to generate thermal energy and domestically it is extremely popular for both central heating and cooking. |
Gas FittingWhy is it important that you choose the right gas appliance?
There are a number things to consider when you are choosing the gas appliance for your home including functionality and safety. Most importantly the appliance needs to be safe. The appliance you choose needs to be compatible with your home and family andthis is particularly relevant when your are purchasing a second hand appliance. Some appliances work only with certain gas types so make sure you always check the identification plate to establish whether it is a certified natural gas or LPG appliance. Conversions can be made to suit the supply to your area but these need to be made by a qualified and licensed gas fitter who is endorsed for gas fitting work. Are you at of risk of gassing your loved ones?
Some of the signs that your gas appliances are not performing as well as they should can be hard to spot. A poorly serviced gas system or appliance can be extremely harmful or even deadly to your family so it is important to watch for any of the following signs that your system or appliance needs a service: Does your appliance have a yellow flame, rather than a blue flame?Blue flames are smokeless, while yellow fames are dirty and therefore produce smoke, e.g. candles. It is worth noting though that some ‘flame effect’ heaters are designed to burn a yellow flame. If you’re unsure, give us a call and we can have a look at it for you. Are there soot deposits in or around the appliance? If you see soot building up on the burner, it is a sign that your appliance is burning carbon which, once hot, is releasing a dirty smoke into your home. Use your nose If you notice an unpleasant, distinctive smell similar to that of a car exhaust it is a sure sign that your appliance is producing excessive Carbon Monoxide. Carbon Monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. While it is odourless, it is accompanied by other emissions that may produce a "car exhaust" smell or watery eyes. Check when your appliance was last serviced Most manufacturers recommend that all gas appliances should be given a service and check-up every year. To avoid having problems with your gas appliances it is important to maintain them regularly. If an appliance cannot burn its fuel efficiently (due to inadequate ventilation, gas line blockages, leaks or a fault) it may produce Carbon Monoxide which can be deadly and also a build up of soot or dust will make the appliance more costly to run and shorten its life span.
